Tuesday, April 25, 2006 The Strokes What the heck is a stroke??? From a medical dictionary, it's a focal neurological defect that lasts for more than 24 hours. From a rocker's dictionary, it's a badn consisting of 5 gobloks who play good music. From Hiong Chin's point of view, it's the act of caressing a part of the human anatomy. There's just too many different explanations for this freagin small word. Wunder... While reading some stuff about music, suddenly only thought about The Strokes today. Till this day i'm still wondering why they actually decided to call themselves The Strokes. If it was Jenson a.k.a Prof M, he would probably explain it in a medical point of view that The Strokes called themselves The Strokes because these 5 lads had previous cerebrovascular accidents before this and recovered enough to be able to sing in a band hence naming themselves The Strokes. An explanation that doesn't really help much. Today my research group had to meet up again to discuss about our research on STROKE since our research has been rather dormant of late. As far as i'm concerned, we've pretty much got our figures and facts together with some literature reviews done. One of the things we didn't have was a title for our research project. Weird innit? Want to do research but got no title. To make it even funnier, it's already been 5 weeks since we started working on this research. It's amazing how we've been rather blindly doing research without any sense of direction. Thank goodness that got sorted out today after we met Prof Kwa about it. I believe she is equally as blur as us regarding this research. When we arrived at her door, she asked us who were looking for... Come on... your own research kaki also dunno? Real joke. Strokes.. sighs... To add to the stroke tally today, it's been reported that the owner of Manchester United had a stroke last weekend. I wonder what's with strokes. Never knew such a small word can play such a big role in a day. Monday, April 24, 2006 Star-gazing In a blink of an eye 7 weeks have past since i first started clinical school. the journey thus far has been a great one. one which has brought me through many high and low points. in medicine, learning never ends. no matter how much you think you already know, theres a vast ocean of information out there that awaits us to conquer it. the internal medicine posting pretty much summarizes what i'm trying to say. i may be able to make a provisional diagnosis on a certain condition but below that theres a freagin long list of differential diagnoses waiting for me to rule them out one by one. if i'm ever going to be a competent doctor, there would only be one mentor which i would like to train under, that's definitely God. afterall, He is the one that allowed there to be disease and only He knows the slightest difference between disease A and disease B. medicine, a passion which will always keep me wondering. it seems what the mind does not know, the eye does not see. well said from a great lecturer. Aights, the family medicine posting starts today. it's pretty much a posting that allows us to have an insight to what a normal general practioner would do while running his everyday clinic. inquisitive as i am, being a general practioner isn't what i really fancy but then again, they're the people that are out there making first contact with the community and making first line diagnoses. so general practioners do play a significant role in some ways though its always said that if we study medicine, it would be a waste to just be a general practioner. debatable, but for me, it wouln't be of any waste as long as you like what you do and you are able to do it with excellence. we'll see about it once i complete this posting. keeps me wondering again. "How's life la boss??" that seems to be the only question i'm asked everytime i go back to KL or meet up with some long lost friend. dunno why people ask the same question over and over again though they see me every weekend. to keep it short, life has been pretty much the same. nothing much has changed for me all these while. i'm still the same simple lad trying to put pieces of the puzzle together with God's aid in hope that i'll see a beautiful end product to this one and only life which i have. life in seremban hasn't really changed much from life in KL else than the fact that seremban is pretty quiet and life here is just not as zesty and lively. things here tend to trickle at a slower pace with people driving at speeds as low as 20km/h. that's how sad this place is. it's so insignificant that google-earth can't even locate it. like i've always said, it's small like a siew pow. based on some observation, people have commented that i've becomed quiet of late compared to what i was before. i guess they have a point in that. in actual fact, i'm not one who likes to say much but rather spend my time figuring things like a jigsaw puzzle. adding to that, there have also been some life changing lessons that i've learned over the past few months that have made me into what i am today. if there's one thing i seek, it's the desire that God will take my life and fill the rather huge emptiness that I have inside. may He work in me each and everyday that the metamorphosis of life will be a beautiful picture someday. Jesus, take the wheel. Goodwill games... woo hoo!!. the tournament that's initiated to allow closer ties to take place between students in the clinical school and those that are in seremban. football and futsal have always been a major event. last year, we managed to play the match at the King George V field which was excellent. this year, it was even better, we played at Paroi!! of course my remark is plain sarcasm as we played on a pitch worthy for the buffaloes to graze on. the pitch was horrible. i could bet half the team got injured due to the field rather than the tackles. at the end of a pulsating match, us lads lost 4-6. A good game played in good spirit. no regrets. in a game there will always be a loser and a winner. a big round of applause to the lads from bukit jalil for a great performance. it was the same for futsal as well, though we lost, the match was a great game of quick moving futsal. looking forward to the next one. Aights, till the next post from the sleepy hollow of seremban. toodles lads and lasses. Cheers! Saturday, April 08, 2006 What if... Exactly 4 years ago, i was supposed to leave on a jet plane to a place filled with furry marsupials and mad people a.k.a Australia. Somehow that plan didn't materialise and I'M STILL STUCK IN HERE!!! ARGHH!!! Then of course i did hope to go a Partner Medical School but decided not to later. If i would have gone to any Partner Medical School it would definitely have been the Uni Adelaide, of course Dundee would have been cool. So why choose Adelaide?? I've got a rather crazy but decent reason to go there to study. The picture pretty much explains it all... Asian Connect, I'd like to get connected dude...(Looks wicked sick :P) ![]() These lads are Ben, david, Zie and Marko (From left to right). I wonder what would have happened if i actually did go to Aussie. I'd probably end up half-quacko like them lads. Currently i'm quarter-quacko so... probably wouldn't have made much of a difference. Btw, great pic Marko. Miss u big time boss. Cheers! Wednesday, April 05, 2006 Siew pow Yup, my blog has been pretty dead and lifeless due to many factors. Strangely, this is the first time i'm actually blogging from a public utility a.k.a library computer. Streamyx in Seremban has been dead for the past few weeks and the library has a so-so internet connection which just suffices for the time being. With the advent of the 'demise' of Streamyx for the past weeks, the blog also 'dies'. Pretty much like how the body needs oxygen to survive. I wonder if those people at Telekom are actually dead and need emergency resuscitation. Every time we call the Streamyx helpline, a stupid message telling us that assistance will be offered ensues props up. I think it's one of the stupidest things a company like Telekom should do. It's all about offering quality service. If you can't offer it, just don't brag. Streamyx sucks and there's nothing that can prove that it's good so far. Sighs. That's the reason why they are so proud about the MALAYSIA BOLEH attitude. Yeah right. Seremban. It's so small, it's almost like a siew pow. With the sun scorching hot, i'm not surprised to see people getting tanned like the colour of a siewpow. Strangely, though things have been a bit haywire of late, i'm kinda having a pretty good time stuck in this town, at least for now. Exams are up in a weeks time and i've done nuts about it. Hope i won't fail my first exam here. Will be bad shape if i did. Bad omen too. Gotta go pray for some inspiration. As for interaction with hospital staff, i'm kinda having a blast. I do get 'blasted' for being really inadequate in knowledge but i'm also having a 'blast' learning lotsa new things and chilling out with the docs. Back to the rather scorching weather, one of the Medical officers actually lambasted the actions of nurses who suggested the idea of wearing a labcoat in a hospital like Seremban GH. I'll have to support his idea. I mean, come on, them nurses do admin work in 'air-conditioned' rooms while us docs and future docs are stuck in a furnace everyday. The other weird thing is... Do nurses even wear labcoats? I think they should wear trenchcoats since they want to have suaveness and style. That would let them feel 'hot' in a hospital like this. Aights, i've fired lotsa ammunition today. Gotta reload on my other ammunition a.k.a. notes and books before i get blasted left right and centre.
