Merdeka

50 years. That's a pretty long time. That's how old Malaysia is gonna be in a few days time. After living my entire life stuck in this country, i can't really see myself elsewhere. To me, it's gotta be the most beautiful place on this freagin planet for some reason. I've got Malay, Indian, Chinese, Iban, Kadazan, Murud, Kelabit, Caucasian and some really weird people as friends here. We've probably got the most wickedly good food on the planet and the one and only original 24 hour mamak stalls that are uniquely Malaysian. What more can I ask for? I think we're so blessed that we tend to forget how blessed we are at times.

Happy 50th Independence Day to Malaysia!

Simply Wicked

Yeah yeah... i know i always look freagin serious. Even the kids in the paeds ward and other hospital staff think so. Actually i still wonder why i always look so serious when i'm probably the least serious of the lads. If people say that i don't smile, i'll have to agree with that. I think the last time i ever had a 'smile' was when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. That itself explains that its rare.

As of yesterday, i've learned to smile a bit. Why?... thanks to God, i'm finally done with fourth year and now entering into final year in med school. I guess the day has finally come when i can greet the patient and say... Good morning, I'm Collin, final year medical student. That simply rocks. I guess the journey here wasn't all that plain sailing but it has been one that has been worth it thanks to God's help. There's a long hard year ahead but at least, I can smile.

As of today, I smiled for quite a while. I hope the smile while last. Meanwhile, I can only hope and keep my hands closed in prayer. May God lead me on. :)

Zargonians

It's been 1.5 years since i ended up in this place which is ironically called RK somewhere in the middle of no where. It's not even in Seremban per se. Sheesh.
If I recall, things were going really well during the first few months. We had two really great neighbours and things were really great. After 6 months, we got new neighbours on our left side. These guys rock. When HL used to blast his bass at obscene volumes, they would say.... "You guys are really good neighbours, hardly make any noise". That wasn't in a sarcastic tone of course. It's partly due to the fact that they are hardly home and it's only their 2 tiny kids which are suffering from our noise pollution. When our water pipe exploded, it was these fellers who came over to offer help. Wunderful fellers. These guys are totally awesome.

In contrast from the lefties, the fellers on the right morphed from really nice neighbours to a dungu clan. If you thought the Simpsons were dysfunctional, these fellers are probably non-functional. I'm not sure if they received a mandate from Planet Zargon to change their mentality or they just decided to be stone and indifferent.

So what have these jokers been up to? About a year ago, after receiving a mandate from Planet Zargon, they started chanting some weird verses with their radios blasting at full volume right smack at 11pm. It is a nightly affair and I have no idea why. With their twisted sick symphony blasting, their dog soon becomes delusional and starts howling to their chants while banging its head on the dog kennel. That's one mad dog. Head banging against the cage. Following that routine, the dog tosses his feeding bowl over his head and runs around in circles. Once the chanting stops, some weird music is played till the wee hours of the morning. I wonder what those fellers are up to. Sometimes there are weird blinking lights radiating from the rooms. Hmm. It's an eyesore in the evenings when the tribal chief of the Zargonians comes out to expose his mighty hairy tondi while lighting up his cigarettes as a sign of power while looking at us. As a result of the mad dog, even HL bought me a weapon with Portuguese credentials to exterminate it. Good idea but the ammo just ain't gonna do it. To make things even weirder, the head of the Zargonians sorta gave us a verbal fine because our grass has made his 'palace' look bad. Weird.

The Hiang Liang Dog Exterminator Version 2099. Made in Melaka.

Provisional diagnosis:

Zargonians : Schizotypal disorder
Dog : Folie a deux

Management:

Love your neighbour just as you love yourself!!!!

End

Tikus mania

Aight, i know it sounds weird, but i'm still pretty intrigued by the picture of this mad rat which is sitting right in front of me. So far, everyone (even a middle aged auntie) has told me that this Ratatouille show is a must watch even for a goblok like myself. Oklar, so it's a good show for the family but knowing me, i think it will take some really sick humour to make me appreciate it. The last show to really satisfy me has honestly got to be Nacho Libre. That was of wicked quality. The longer I look at the picture of that freagin rat running hysterically with his cheese, the more intrigued i am. I think i'll probably just go down to Ah Chong's DVD store to get myself a copy of the show since its almost impossible to get a ticket now. Going alone to the cinema for a show full of families would be weird as well. So, its justifiable to go get the DVD for once.

So why suddenly ramble about Remy the rat? To cut it short, seeing a rat in one of those lorong belakangs while walking back after a drink sorta reminded me about the freagin show. I guess those dark lorong belakangs do bring back loadsa crazy memories. Our Malaysian rat definitely will ta pau that french rat. I got no qualms about that. In terms of food and nutrition, our Malaysian rat also more well nourished than french rats. The largest one i've seen is the size of a cat. No joke. If you have nothing better to do, just drop by your lorong belakang one of these nights. Surely you will meet Roti-touille the rat nourished by discarded roti canai. Health wise, our rat probably die earlier due to coronary heart disease. Other than that, Malaysian rats rock!

Okay, that was a load of crap... All triggered by a fat rat from the lorong. Squeek.

The End is the Beginning

It's now really deep into the night. I haven't got a clue as to why i'm still up. I'm not quite sure if its insomnia or some sleeping disorder that seems to be hounding me on a daily basis. Even if it is, i think it will come in handy since i'm technically only a 365 days away from joining the rat race in the hell-hole wards.

In a weeks time, i'll be done with semester 8, a semester filled with bittersweet memories which marks the end of my journey as a 4th year medical student and the beginning of life as a final year medical student. I guess the definition of a 'final year medical student' doesn't really do justice as we merely just move on to another year of challenges in a life that practically makes you a student for life. Either way, it's something to savour as it does make you feel some degree of satisfaction that life is moving along and according to plan.

Just looking at the stack of books and journals piled on the table at times and staying in the wards with a morbid patient just makes you wonder if you made the right decision 4 years ago. It's still a question i ask myself till this very day. Is all this sacrifice really worth it? I don't know and I hope I'll survive to find out. Then again, despite medicine being a passion, will passion outlast altruistic sacrifice? Again, I don't know. At the end of the day, it all comes back to one question, What Would Jesus Do?

As time passes, so does important milestones in life. I know eventually one day everyone of my batchmates and myself will graduate but what about other aspects in life. Today marked the birthday of one of my close friends. That itself was a milestone in history. The intricate way of cutting the cake by his girlfriend reminded me of the past where a few of us who were close acquaintances used to celebrate our birthdays together. On each occasion, she would be the one who would be nice enough to cut the cakes for us together with another one of my close pals. Although it's just a small action, it has left a sigificant impact in terms of memories for me. I guess in some way, this is holding on to the past. I just wonder if i'll ever let go and move on with life. Memories... sweet as they are, painful they can be.

Issues, issues, issues.... Many unresolved but hopefully there will be a resolution.

Since this post coincides with the end of my beloved Orthopaedics posting and beginning of Psychiatry, i think this basically portays what life at the moment is like. This is basically what happens when you have reached a dead end and have become somewhat bored with life. Externally fix your son's pink panther with Ilizarov Rings.

Have I reached that stage? I dunno. I hope not.

Peace.
